Meiosis, Growth Curve & Stress Adaptation
Concept: Meiosis generates genetic diversity, microbial growth follows predictable kinetics, and stress adaptation ensures survival in fluctuating environments.
1. Stages of Meiosis
Prophase I (Most Important for NET/GATE)
| Stage | Key Event | Exam Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Leptotene | Chromosomes condense | Initiation of pairing |
| Zygotene | Synapsis begins | Synaptonemal complex formation |
| Pachytene | Crossing over occurs | Genetic recombination |
| Diplotene | Chiasmata visible | Homolog separation starts |
| Diakinesis | Terminalization | Spindle attachment |
Exam Tip: Pachytene = recombination hotspot. NET/GATE often ask: "At which stage does crossing over occur?"
2. Microbial Growth Curve
Exam Tip:
- Log phase → maximum growth rate, target for antibiotics.
- Stationary phase → secondary metabolite production (antibiotics, pigments).
- Death phase → nutrient depletion & toxin accumulation.
3. Growth Kinetics
N = N₀ × 2ⁿ
ln N − ln N₀ = μt
g = 0.693 / μ
ln N − ln N₀ = μt
g = 0.693 / μ
Example
Initial cells = 100
Final cells = 1600
100 → 200 → 400 → 800 → 1600
n = 4
Time = 120 minutes
g = 120 / 4 = 30 minutes
Final cells = 1600
100 → 200 → 400 → 800 → 1600
n = 4
Time = 120 minutes
g = 120 / 4 = 30 minutes
4. Stress Adaptation
Temperature Stress
- Heat → Heat shock proteins (HSPs) stabilize proteins
- Cold → Increased unsaturated fatty acids for membrane fluidity
Salt Stress
- Compatible solutes: Proline, Glycine betaine, Trehalose
ROS Defense
| Enzyme | Function |
|---|---|
| SOD | Converts superoxide to hydrogen peroxide |
| Catalase | Converts hydrogen peroxide to water + oxygen |
| Peroxidase | Breaks down peroxides using electron donors |
5. Extra Notes for NET/GATE
- Cell Cycle Checkpoints: G1/S (DNA damage), G2/M (DNA replication), Spindle checkpoint.
- Apoptosis: Caspase cascade, intrinsic vs extrinsic pathways.
- Model Organisms: Yeast (cell cycle), Drosophila (development), Arabidopsis (plant genetics).
- Biostatistics: Mean, Median, Mode, Standard deviation, Chi-square test.
- Ecology: r/K selection, Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model.
Exam Tips:
- NET often asks about checkpoint regulation. - GATE emphasizes growth kinetics calculations. - Remember: Stationary phase = industrial fermentation importance.
